FAQ
If yours is not a frequently asked question, do not hesitate to
What is the best way to indicate image location in the manuscript?
Good question. It’s deceptively tricky. After trying many systems over the years, we have developed a super-simple and efficient technique. Check out our dedicated page for the details.
How do you handle reprint corrections?
We always process reprint corrections with the highest priority, so you can get a reprint underway quickly. Turnaround time is less than 5 minutes for basic text corrections such as spelling errors, and there is no charge. Typesetting additional material such as praise quotes will take a little longer but turnaround is generally less than 30 minutes and costs are dependent on the number of typeset pages.
Can you convert a PDF to an InDesign document?
Yes. The resulting InDesign file is suitable as the starting point for producing a new edition of the book – it does not produce a perfect WYSIWYG copy. It does, however, maintain the integrity of the text including attributes such as italics. For books that are typeset by Bookhouse, this is a free service. Contact us for bureau service rates.
Can you tell me if a my image is suitable for printing?
Yes. We can resize any image to a target resolution and let you know the physical size. Because physical size and resolution are inter-dependent, you will be able to determine if the image will be large enough for its intended purpose. You can email the files to us if there’s just a few or we can provide you a link so you can upload. If the size is not suitable, it is likely we can salvage a usable image with our machine learning image-processing software.
How do we send large files?
While it is possible for us to receive email up to 125 MB, few corporate email systems will allow sending of email larger than 20 MB. The best way to get around this is to drop-ship large files directly to us at our upload site. This is a secure, one-way transfer which does not require login. This is a better option than using free 3rd-party services because the files are transferred directly, and it does not require you to agree to Terms of Service that may conflict with your other legal commitments.
What font size did you use?
While that is a very easy question to answer on a basic level, font size is not as simple as it sounds. The way a font’s size is measured and the way we perceive readability of text are remarkably different. Check out our article for the fine points.
Can you convert double-quotes to single quotes?
Yes. We use a special software utility we developed in-house which carefully inverts the usage of double quotes and single quotes. The software works well, with virtually error-free results. We have a dedicated page on how it works.
Can you fix a low-resolution image?
Until recently, the answer to that question would have been, ‘It can be done, but…’. Now, it’s an unqualified yes. We have machine-learning software which does what would have once seemed impossible and is capable of salvaging high-quality results from images as low as 80 DPI. Check out our article on image resolution for the fine details, and also our dedicated page of example images.
Is there any way to change the page numbers in the index?
Yes. We have developed software for doing that. It is effective and robust. You can find out more about how it works in the article.
Is it possible to automatically renumber endnotes?
Yes. We have developed an InDesign plug-in that allows us to renumber endnotes, even if they are no longer linked in Microsoft Word. We can also convert numbered notes to page-referenced snippets. Read more about it in our article.
We are publishing an Australian edition of an American text; is that something you can help us with?
Yes. We have an advanced conversion table of US-to-AU spelling which can massively reduce the time it takes to create a
localizsed
localised version. We can also convert double quotes to single quotes.
We don’t have time to do an index, do we?
We have developed software in-house which can create an index from a list of phrases which appear in the book. Our dedicated article has all the details. It could never replace a proper index created by professionals such as Puddingburn, but it is very good in situations where there is no index at all and the book really needs one.
How do you track the time you spend on each job?
We developed a cute little digital friend called TimeFrogger. Every ten seconds, TimeFrogger checks all the open software applications – such as InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator – and takes note of the document we have open. Because TimeFrogger checks on us so frequently, they are remarkably accurate at keeping track. You can find out more about how TimeFrogger works in our dedicated article.
How quickly can you…?
Anything’s possible… We do offer a priority turnaround service. Prices vary, depending on the desired turnaround. It is possible to produce a complete book in 24 hours but that’s a special thing.
What are your prices?
Prices are based on the number of pages and the trim size of the book. For publishers who do multiple books a year with us, we have a fixed-price grid rate which can simplify the budgeting and administration. The only way for us to accurately quote is to discuss the specifics of your projects so contact us.
